Symptoms of GERD

The chief symptoms are

  1. Heartburn– A burning sensation under the chest in the midline, usually after food.
  2. Regurgitation– a perception of flow of sour food or liquid into the throat or mouth.

Additionally, patient may also have chest pain which may be confused with a cardiac problem. 

On occasion, patients can also feel a sensation of lump in the throat, difficulty in swallowing, long standing cough, voice changes, asthma or sleep disturbances. 

Most patients have only mild & occasional symptoms. It becomes a problem only when troublesome symptoms  occur regularly.

30-50% of patients also have overlap with symptoms of acidity in stomach, feeling of gaseous bloat or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
